Kidneys are the specialized organs that conduct the function of filtration in the body. They are two in number in a normal healthy human body. Their size is in contrast to their functions. A variety of functions are carried out by kidneys that include:
The main job of kidneys is to filter extra water and wastes out of the blood to make urine. To keep your body working properly, the kidneys balance the salts and minerals such as calcium, phosphorus, sodium, and potassium—that circulate in the blood. The kidneys also make hormones that help control blood pressure, make red blood cells and keep the bones strong. Kidney disease often can get worse over time and may eventually lead to kidney failure.
What Is Hydronephroisis?
Hydronephrosis is a minor condition which may result due to some underlying disease. It’s structural and affects the body due to blockage or obstruction in the urinary tract. This condition typically occurs when kidney swells due to urine failing to properly drain from the kidney to the bladder. The swelling most commonly hit only one kidney, but the effect involves both kidneys.
Treatment of kidney disease depends on the type and stage of the kidney problem, the original cause, and the duration of the disease. Kidney infections can be treated with antibiotics if the infection is caused by bacteria. Inflammation due to an immune reaction is more difficult to treat. These work only in some types of nephritis or inflammation of the kidneys. Some people have to eat less salt and protein until the kidney can remove these substances from the blood properly.
Glomerular filtration rate is one of the likely tests to measure the level of kidney function and determine the kidney disease stage. The doctor can calculate it from the results of the blood creatinine test, the age, body size and gender. The GFR tells the stage of kidney disease and helps in planning the treatment. If the GFR number is low, the kidneys are not working as well as they should. The earlier kidney disease is found, the better are the chance of stopping its progression.
